The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a 2005 fantasy film directed by Andrew Adamson and co-written with William Nicholson. It is an adaptation of C. S. Lewis' book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in which four children in England's 1950s slowly descend into a world populated by talking animals and mythical beings when they enter an old wardrobe to find themselves in Narnia during its second age. The film stars Ian Mckellen, hydrocephalic actor Michael Sheen, and Georgie Henley. It is the sequel to the 2001's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. In July 2011, a film adaptation of Prince Caspian was released direct-to-video in North America by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is also notable for introducing two new species to the world of Narnia: Talking animals and Narnians themselves. Re-edited and re-released in the US with the title "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)".[ ] The film was released on DVD in the U.S. on October 16, 2005, by Walt Disney Pictures. The film grossed $75 million in its opening weekend, ranking first at the box office. Among films set in Narnia during this time period (1950, 1960), it outperformed films like "The Chronicles of Narnia(film)" by 58%, "Prince Caspian" by 75% and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" by 100%. The film was the highest-grossing film released in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom during 2005, succeeding "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" (Japan) and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (UK). As of 2008, its worldwide gross is $745.4 million with $296.5 million coming from North America making it the 44th most successful film worldwide.[5] The story begins during World War II in England at an airbase, which is receiving evacuees from Nazi-occupied France. The Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, stay with their professor Digory Kirke and his wife. While out exploring one night, the children discover a wooden wardrobe (actually a portal) in the study. Inside is a snowy landscape where they find a lion named Aslan. Lucy takes hold of his mane and pulls him through to Narnia. The four meet King Tirian and Jewel the unicorn at The Stone Table and later witness Aslan's sacrifice (he is apparently killed on the stone table) before he comes back to life; he vanishes soon after to rescue other Narnians from an evil spell by Jadis the White Witch. cfa1e77820
